SEX BOMB: House of Matriarch's Orca perfume earns praise in BASENOTES 'ambergris' expose!

House of Matriarch Orca is a beautiful, sexed-up lump of silver driftwood that’s been rubbed all over with honey and left to bake in the sun for ten years on a beach until it develops a patina of salt crystals. The opening is enticingly dry and smoky, with charred woods and a crispy leather facet that reads like crushed seashells or dried seaweed (briefly reminding me of the dark, salty leather in HoM’s wonderful Blackbird, or Black No. 1 as it’s now known).

Choya Loban, a type of Indian frankincense, adds a resiny dryness that works very well with the brief hit of bitter orange to introduce the warm, salty ambergris that dominates the scent. Christi Meshell, the perfumer behind House of Matriarch, is well-known for her deft use of naturals and her witchy-hippy aesthetic, and both these sides are showcased perfectly in Orca.

The perfume uses a natural tincture of ambergris that Christi herself produced using a large and rare vintage piece of ambergris sourced from New Zealand. The drydown last forever, as befits a high dosage of natural ambergris, a dry veil of sparkling beach resins, salt, and spicy woods that is only very faintly sweet. "Scent driven" for her entire life, (20% of the population is) it was not until she reached the juncture in her mystical studies where she worked her way through the natural correspondences of the celestial bodies, signs, musical tones, crystals, the Kabbalah, Chakras and other spiritual systems that she was "activated" as a Perfumer.

Christi had already amassed an enormous collectionn of essential oils which she had been collecting for a lifetime. Once she began arranging them in ways that had special, even magical meanings the essences and blends activated her further.

Essence became the Holy Grail of her spiritual studies - it held answers, questions and possibility. It was like some kind of magical healing language she had toned for lifetimes. She dedicated an entire wing of her home to her passion, wrapped up a lucrative 15 year career as a real estate broker on Seattle's upper Eastside and dove straight into creating House of Matriarch.

Perfumer Christi Meshell used to make custom candles for magic and ritual in her kitchen - the start of her life as a Perfumer.

Perfumed candles came first: they became very popular and custom orders from "those who knew" were pouring in. Energy Workers, Astrologers, Musicians, even Orisha Priests could feel the magic the candles possessed due to the intentioned arrangement of the notes. One fateful day someone commented on how they would love to own a perfume that smelled like one of her candles. Everything clicked - since that day in 2009 she has dedicated herself to the High Art of Magical Perfume Making. She has established the House of Matriarch brand to share her message of beauty, magic and healing with the world.

The first perfume, Matriarch was launched on Christi's 36th birthday, in 2009. It was a simple blend of just 36 notes. Now her creations can consist of 300 or more individual essences and are named among the highest quality perfumes on Earth.

We're trending! Last week House of Matriarch participated in Downtown Seattle Nordstrom Fall 2015 Beauty Trend Show. At this seasonal event, the Nordstrom beauty department reveals what is on trend in Beauty and the season's must-haves.

Of course, being a new product in the department made House of Matriarch a go-to for the event. Beyond that, House of Matriarch perfumes are relevant because of trending demand from customers for more natural products and meaningful luxury. Shop our fragrances trending in Nordstrom here.

Our Creatrix, Christi Meshell was there for the show and spent time meeting with customers and sharing her passion for the natural ingredients that make up our artisan fragrances.

The Beauty Trend Show also gave us the opportunity to meet the other brand founders who had been invited to present at Trend, like Dr Robb co-founder of Clairsonic.

House Of Matriarch High Perfumery was also premiered during Downtown Seattle Nordstrom Customer Rewards Night holiday shopping party last week! This after-hours VIP shopping experience gave us the opportunity to connect with our customers in a more personal setting.
